So, what is right for me?
Dry – Skin feels tight, rough textured, sometimes itchy. Make up tends to look cakey after application.
Hydrating products will often contain ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, to help plump and retain moisture content. Typically repaired by thicker textures such as lotions or creams. You could even use a dime sized amount of facial oil before bed, to awake to softer skin.
Dehydrated – Often absorbs product like a sponge. Sometimes itchy dry patches, flushed pigmentation, or sensitive to touch. This often occurs after using strong acne fighters, such as Retinol, Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide. Also, items with high content of alcohol, fragrance or acids such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA), can be even more damaging. There is a time and place for them, but not just yet.
Check out thicker cleansers with words such as “soothe” or “nourish.” Aloe or oatmeal are usually found in these. Select a fragrance free liquid or cream moisturizer containing no harsh allergens.
Combination – Certain areas create shine throughout the day, such as nose or chin. Meanwhile, other parts of the face feel normal. Keeps you guessing, may depend on the day.
Balancing cleansers work excellent for replenishing areas needed, without overdoing it.
Seek an oil free daily moisturizer, but make sure to replenish at night with a richer consistency.
If wearing makeup, make an effort to add a little powder to the nose or chin, to keep your hard work from sliding off.
Oily – All over oily, send HELP! Often those with oily skin, tend to be fearful of putting any lotions on the face. But by doing so, your skin ends up over compensating the amount of oil produced, due to lack of moisture retention.
Some brands even carry mattifying lotions. These are to be used in only areas that are your most problematic, such as forehead or nose. If you apply all over, you’re drying out the entire face. Foam or gel cleansers will lightly cleanse away dirt, oil and impurities from throughout the day. Chose a light weight, oil free moisturizer for both day and night time.
